3 Time Management Tips for the Side Hustler

So you’re trying to establish a side hustle while working full-time? Many business owners in the beginning struggle to get their side hustle off the ground while trying to maintain all their other responsibilities. This dilemma leaves many beginning business owners discouraged and overwhelmed. At Chic, we truly believe you can establish your side business with just two hours a day. However, it takes discipline, hard work, and great time management. Therefore today, we are sharing three time management tips to help you balance your side hustle while working full-time. This isn’t easy, but it can be done! We’ve seen it and done it!

Clarify the Actual Work

First, in order to establish great time management habits, you must identify the actual work. Many business owners start by identifying their goals and benchmarks. However, this leaves so much room for error, burn out, and confusion. Setting fancy, motivational goals won’t actually help you manage your side hustle well. In fact, it will leave you with a lot of dreams, but little direction.

Clarifying the actual work that must take place is our biggest time management tip! At the end of the day, your benchmarks do not pay the bills. Therefore, spend time writing down what your financial goals are. Once you establish your financial goals, identify the “actual” work you will have to do to reach that financial goal.

For example, if you want to add 3 more people to your team this month, identify what you need to do every single day in order to reach that goal. When you work from a checklist, you’ll discover you get to that goal easier because you’re so focused on what you were actually doing and achieving daily. It forces you to get so focused on the work it takes to achieve that goal, instead of just the end result.

So write down exactly the actions you must take to reach that financial goal. This may look like:

-How many direct messages you should be sending

-The amount of time you should spend engaging on your social platforms

-Who should you send follow ups to this week

-How many initial emails you should send

-What posts you should make on socials this week

This concept ties directly into our “Proven Two Hour Work Day Challenge”. At Chic Influencer, we are teaching our audience how to work their side hustle in just two hours a day. This challenge strategically splits two hours into different actionable items you should be doing daily in order to get your side hustle off the ground. Consider Your Priorities

Second, our next time management tip is to set appropriate goals for the time you have. In order to set appropriate goals, you must first consider your already existing priorities. There are things in your life that are a priority, meaning that time cannot be touched. Start by writing down the things in your life that cannot be moved or minimized. This may be things like going to your child’s sporting events, date night with your spouse, dinner with your family, your gym time, etc. It is so crucial to identify your untouchables because boundaries really matter!

Often times when business owners do not set boundaries, it creates resentment for their business. Over time, the side hustle feels like it is taking away from the things that really matter. In order to prevent this from happening, start by writing down your untouchables and then set boundaries around those items!

After you establish your untouchables, identify the nights, days, and times that are available. Our most valuable time management tips always revolve around setting the correct boundaries and then time blocking for your business.

We highly encourage you to use the Chic Your Time Blocker! This Time Blocker allows you to write down what each part of your day looks like, so you can clearly see how you can utilize your time adequately.

You should use your Time Blocker to write out your week on Sundays, so you can clearly see what running your business will take.   This is where our time management tip #1 comes into play! When you Time Block, you should write down the specific work you identified in tip# 1. Write down what task you’ll complete and at what day and time. Laying out your week like this will help you utilize and maximize the little time you have!

Writing these items down allows you to clearly see the specific action you need to do every single day to get yourself to the end goal!

Take it One Day at a Time

Next, our last time management tip is to remember that being disciplined and managing your time well is a one day at a time job. There may be some days where you do amazing. You finish everything on your to-do list. You feel accomplished and you start to see results. Other days, you may find that you ran out of time. Something unexpected came up. You needed to be there for a child or a family member. As a reminder, that is okay! Establishing a side hustle is not a one size fits all, and it certainly is not a quick hustle. It is a long game! This is why it is so important to find times that genuinely work for you in the long run. If it isn’t manageable for you and your lifestyle, you aren’t likely to stick with it.

It is crucial to become married to the small steps that will get you to your end goal. The small steps are actually how you live every single day, so it really matters how you spend your days. Your mindset should shift to a mile marker mindset. When you focus on the mile markers right in front of you, you can celebrate each small win! Every time you reach a small benchmark, celebrate it! Break down your large goals into smaller, more attainable goals.

Finally, your failures are not setbacks! They are set ups for you to lean into the business and to learn how to grow from it!

Having great time management starts with celebrating the little victories, choosing to be disciplined each day, and breaking your larger goals into smaller actions!
