5 Ways to Improve Your Social Media Profile
The New Year is HERE, and you know what that means! It’s time to audit your social media profile and get it ready to succeed in 2022. It can be easy to keep doing the same thing over and over again and wonder why you aren’t seeing results. If that’s you, it’s time to change some things up on your social media profile. Today, we are sharing five ways to improve your social media profile, so you can better serve your audience and hit your goals this year!
Change Your Bio
First, it is VERY important that your social media profile is updated and clearly shows what you do. Let’s start with your bio! Often times, business owners make their profiles more about them instead of how they serve. While connecting with your audience personally is important, you bio is not the place for it.
Your bio should attract your target audience! Therefore, one of the biggest disservices you are doing to yourself and your business is not knowing who you serve. Before you can optimize your profile, you MUST identify your target audience. After identifying your target audience, create a bio that draws them in and speaks clearly.
For example, if you help women form healthy eating habits and workout routines your bio may sound something like this-
“I coach and inspire women to make healthy choices that fit their lifestyle!”
On the other hand, here is an example of what NOT to say-
“I am a marathon runner who enjoys making healthy lifestyle choices. Let me show you how!”
Both of these bios describe someone who enjoys healthy lifestyle choices. However, one is geared more towards what you can do for your audience while the other one is focused on who YOU are.
Your words truly do matter when creating a bio, so make it clear and direct!
Clean Up Your Highlights
Next, in order to improve your social media profile you’re going to need to clean up your old highlights. When people come to view your profile, they most likely will scroll through a few of your highlights to get a better understanding of what you do. If you have highlights that are from a few years ago, it is time to archive those!
Start by archiving old highlights, as well as highlights that are no longer relevant. Another great tip is to have no more than 7-8 highlights. Having more than 7-8 can be overwhelming for anyone viewing your profile. It also can be confusing for your already existing followers to find the things that are relevant to your business.
Think of your highlights like a window display! What do you want your audience to see the first time they view your profile? Whatever that is- upload and keep those types of highlights.
Another great tip is to update old highlights with relevant links, IG link buttons, new launches, or your opt-ins. It is important to note that to update the highlights with new information, you will need to delete and remake them. This will take time since you do not want to crowd your stories. However, over a week or two you should be able to upload stories with relevant information, links, and buttons.
After cleaning up and updating your highlights, you’re one step closer to improving your social media profile for 2022!
Show Your Face In Stories
Does showing your face in stories intimidate you? At some point, everyone has been intimidated by showing their face in stories.
However, one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve your social media profile this year is to show up in your stories! Your audience NEEDS to see the passion behind your business! Plus showing up in your stories allows you to connect with your audience on a deeper level.
Remember: People buy because of people, not just because of their products. You can have the prettiest graphics and designs, but if you aren’t showing up in your stories, it is for nothing.
A few other great story tips is to ALWAYS add captions to your stories. Instagram has made it so easy now to add captions, so be sure to use that feature. Often times, people are in line at the grocery store or on their lunch break at work when viewing stories. If you are not adding captions to your stories, they are more than likely getting passed over.
In addition, use all the features stories has to offer. This includes polls, questions, music, links, quiz, etc. Social platforms love when you use their features. Not only that, but your audience has a way to engage with your profile making it easier to show up on their page again.
Make Your Grid Clear
Next, to improve your social media profile this year make sure that your first nine grid squares are clear on what you do and how you serve your audience. Most people viewing your profile will not scroll too far back, so you want your brand message to be weaved within all of your posts. When your brand message is not clear consistently throughout your post, you will lose the attention and interest of your audience.
Another great tip to improve your social media profile this year is to stop screenshooting quotes or graphics from Google. When you screenshot something and repost to your page, it is not sized correctly for the platform. Therefore, your post will have extremely low quality. Presenting yourself as the expert means that you post quality content, and blurry content is not quality. When you find something you love online that you’d love to repost, quickly go into Canva and find the correct sizing for the social platform. Redesign the quote or graphic into your brand colors before posting! Your brand colors and message should be clear, so do not use screen shotted content on your platforms.
Last, remember that your social media grid does not need to be perfectly cohesive! Often times, business owners can become so focused on cohesion that they forget what really matters. Your audience is way more concerned with your brand message and how you show up for them over how cohesive your grid is. Everything should fit your brand, but don’t get hyper focused if your face is cut off in an image or if you misspelled something.
To summarize, your life is not perfect, so having a perfectly curated grid isn’t realistic either. Show up as your true self. Your grid should have an element of relatability, and having a perfectly cohesive grid may come across as not real or sincere.
Use All The Features
Lastly, to improve your social media profile in the New Year, start using all of the features the social platform has to offer. We get it- Reels and Lives can be intimidating! However, Instagram and Facebook promote accounts who use their features. You are missing out on so many opportunities if you are not going Live, creating Reels, or collaborating with other creators.
Instagram just released a collaboration feature where you can collaborate with another account so the photo shows up on both of your profile grids. This is such an amazing feature because you’re able to reach a whole other business owners audience. When collaborating with other creators, try to find creators who compliment what you do. By doing this, you’re bringing value to your audience as well.
If you aren’t sure who to collaborate with, start scrolling through relevant hashtags. You’ll definitely get some “no’s”, but try direct messaging some other likeminded business owners and ask if they would like to collaborate.
Start using the new features that are rolling out on your social platforms to increase your chances of discovering new people and increasing your engagement!
